The Bridge 2 Bridge Marathon of Health started off as a pipe dream. A dream, without any plan or reasoning. But, after witnessing the efforts of our healthcare workers; during the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020, raising money toward a good cause gave a reason to make the dream a reality.

I’ve always wanted to make a difference in our community in a positive way. I’ve never been much of a volunteer or knew how to approach starting an initiative. However, this fundraiser just evolved naturally without any resistance.

Preparation

• lots of stretching prior to the event on the day of as well as all training beforehand
• Stretching, muscle massage/ foam rolling any isolated areas that are reoccurring or commonly irritated and/or of concern

Recovery

• Epsom salts after hard training or high performance workouts
• Icing affected areas(10-15 minute intervals), foam rolling, heat pad on areas (10-15 minute intervals)
• Ice bath after intense and extended durations of performance (e.g. 1+ hours of running or walking)

Physical activity has a relationship with our mental health and well being in many aspects. Have you ever noticed that after a stressful day, if you were to simply go for a walk, you return home feeling better. This is due to to several factors. When you exercise, you are giving yourself an outlet to unwind and clear your mind of some of your worries and stresses.

Also, by increasing your heart rate by exercising, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that

• The marathon and all other distances are NOT a competition, but a personal best. Please, listen to your body and stay hydrated and take breaks as needed
• Practice social distancing measures and all public health guidelines as per WECHU
• Avoid travelling in groups
• Use pedestrian lanes, trails and sidewalks
• Cyclists to obey all the rules of the road (stop signs, intersections, right of way, proximity to other vehicles and participants etc).
